Alex’s Great State Race

Bridging Rivalry for a Cause

Alex’s Great State Race (AGSR) stands as a remarkable annual tradition that brings together the University of Michigan and Michigan State University (MSU) in a spirit of unity. Held on the eve of the highly anticipated UM vs. MSU football game, this event uniquely sets aside the intense athletic rivalry between the two institutions to champion a common cause. The race honors the memory of Alex Powell, a former MSU student who demonstrated immense resilience while battling cancer and utilizing disability services at both universities. His aspiration to positively impact the world serves as the foundational inspiration for the event. At its core, AGSR aims to raise awareness and vital funds to support students with disabilities at both UM and MSU.

The approximately 64-mile route of Alex’s Great State Race physically connects the cities of Ann Arbor and East Lansing, with the starting and ending points alternating between the two university campuses each year; in 2024, the race commenced at MSU and concluded at UM.

The Race

The 64-mile relay run, where ROTC cadets from both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University take turns carrying the football destined for the rivalry game, is a powerful demonstration of unity that transcends the intense athletic competition between the two institutions. This tradition symbolizes the commitment of future military leaders to serving not only their country but also their broader communities. By collaborating on this demanding physical feat, the Cadets exemplify the ability to put aside differences and work together towards a common goal: raising awareness and crucial funds for students with disabilities at both universities, in honor of Alex Powell’s inspiring legacy. This act underscores the values of teamwork, dedication, and social responsibility that are integral to the development of these future officers.
