The Bataan Memorial Death March is more than just a grueling endurance event—it is a solemn tribute to the American and Filipino soldiers who endured the infamous 1942 Bataan Death March during World War II. Each year, Cadets from the University of Michigan Army ROTC honor their sacrifice by taking part in this demanding 26.2-mile ruck march through the harsh terrain of White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.
Participation in this event is a privilege reserved for a select team of 10 Cadets who train rigorously throughout the fall and winter semesters. The selection process is highly competitive, pushing Cadets to their physical and mental limits while reinforcing discipline, resilience, and leadership. Through intense conditioning, ruck marches, and team-based challenges, these Cadets develop the endurance and fortitude necessary to represent Michigan at this historic event.
Beyond the physical challenge, the Bataan Memorial Death March is an opportunity to strengthen teamwork and camaraderie. As Michigan Cadets, we embrace our tradition as Leaders and Best, using this experience to forge unbreakable bonds and refine our leadership skills. This march is not just a test of endurance—it is a testament to our dedication, our unity, and our commitment to honoring those who came before us.
